We took part in a rice planting volunteering initiative on May 12th in the town of Minami-Aso.

Ageing and depopulation are serious issues that must be addressed in order to protect the town’s rice paddies and protect the region’s natural system in the process, as the area’s rice paddies play a important role as a reservoir of natural water for the entire Kumamoto region. GPSS has supported the efforts made towards saving this system.

This small town is still in the process of recovering from the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes. Rail, roads and hot springs have been out of service since 2016. We pledge to help the town recover by harnessing the power of such renewable power sources as small hydro and geothermal energy.
